Language Overview: Macedonian is the language of Macedonia. Macedonian has a classification of Indo-European, Slavic, South, and Eastern.
Regions Spoken: The northern dialect is spoken throughout the Kumanovo-Kratovo region; the southeastern dialect is spoken around Gevgelija, Strumica, and Lake Dojran; the western dialect has on sub-dialect in the Veles, Prilep, Kichevo, in the Debar-Galchnik and the Bitola region. Macedonian is also spoken in Albania, Bulgaria, Canada, Greece, Hungary, and Slovenia.
Population: There are about 1,386,000 people who speak Macedonian in Macedonia, as of 1986. The total population of all Macedonian speakers is about 1,598,000 (which means that approximately 212,000 people speak Macedonian outside of Macedonia).
Alternate Name: Macedonian has a few other names: Makedonski, Slavic, and Macedonian Slavic.
Dialects: Some dialects of Macedonian are Northern Macedonian, Southeastern Macedonian, and Western Macedonian. The standard dialect is recognized as of 1944.
Brief History: Macedonian is a national language. Macedonian has a very strong sociopolitical attitude and is called ‘Slavic’ in Greece because Macedonian is considered to be a dialect of Bulgarian by some people in Bulgaria. Macedonian was used in radio programs, grammar and the bible in 1990.
