I want to do some translating. For example, I would like to translate The China Study into French.
Could I just propose that to an editor or what?
I have a degree in linguistics and did some literary translation, but am not a specialist.
Mmm… I’ve got better things to do than a masters in translation.

If you’re not a specialist, then you’ll find it pretty hard to find any proper work, especially freelance as they’ll be expecting good stuff. If you want a proper career out of it, you’ll need a degree or masters in translation to show you can actually do it.

I totally agree with London’s answer.
You could translate this book, but here are 2 things to consider:
1- Best translators work to translate things into their native language.
2- You need to be very proficient in both languages and in comparative linguistics to make sure you do not commit any interference while translating. Because if you do, your text will “reeks” of translation and no editor would publish such a book.
