About Vallejo, California

Vallejo is the largest city in Solano County, California, United States. The population was 116,000 at the 2000 census. It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area on the northeastern shore of San Pablo Bay. Vallejo is named for General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.Vallejo is home to the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom theme park (formerly Marine World and Marine World Africa USA).

According to United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 48.8 mi². Land area is 30 mi², and 18 mi² or 8% is water. The Napa River flows until it changes into the Mare Island Strait in Vallejo which then flows into the San Pablo Bay. In the city the population was spread out with 28% under the age of 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 30% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 11% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 94 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88 males.Although the town is named after General Vallejo, the man regarded as the true founder of Vallejo is John B. Frisbie. After his daughter Epifania married Frisbie, General Vallejo granted him power of attorney for the land grant. It was Frisbie who hired E.H. Rowe, the man who designed the city layout and who named the east-west streets after states and the north-south streets after California counties.
