Guatemala is the most populous nation in Central America, it is well known for its ancient Mayan ruins, beautiful lush rainforest's and majestic volcanoes. Despite the nation being quite stable for many years now, Guatemala’s history of military corruption and civil war have created a country where over 50% of the people are living below the poverty line and within this poverty stricken country those that are most vulnerable are the children. In Guatemala City alone there are almost 400,000 children currently at significant risk of violence, corruption, abuse and malnutrition. It is well know that a good education is one of the strongest methods to help people pull themselves out of poverty and to stop the cycle. However, currently less than 20% of all children ever complete the sixth grade and for the children of Guatemala City many of them will never see the inside of a classroom, let alone get to grade 6, and most of their teaching will be found on the violent streets of the inner cities.
For the 5th year in a row, various members of the Forest Brook Community Church will take part of a humanitarian mission to Guatemala. Their mission will be focused on rebuilding a school within Guatemala City that was destroyed by mudslides, providing a much-needed safe learning environment. The total cost of the project is around $100,000.00, to rebuild the class rooms, washrooms, to landscape the school grounds and build security walls around the property of the school. Members of the Church pay for their own expenses for the mission, and will work really hard to accomplish something amazing and rewarding. In addition they will also be working with the community doing outreach, helping provide food and clothing to those most in need.
Language Marketplace is honored to have the opportunity to provide them with support in terms of a monetary donation to aid this group to Guatemala, October 21-28, 2016.
